Boardroom excellence begins with governance education and training, understanding governance practices and structures, setting clear performance goals that are aligned with corporate strategy, and staying current on changing trends in the marketplace. Directorship is a demanding and exciting journey of continuous learning. How do aspiring and current board directors stay on top of board trends, market trends, and best practices? One essential director resource is National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD).

Completing NACD’s Governance Fellowship gave me many governance insights, tools to succeed as an independent director, and the knowledge base to join other board members serving public and private companies.

Three takeaways from the fellowship are the following:

  1. The pace of change is accelerating - innovation and disruption in corporate America is moving faster than anyone can comprehend, new technologies are transforming every industry

  2. Board diversity - the need for fresh perspectives, expertise, experience, and more qualified women - is a mandate for every board

  3. Potential risks, threats and disruptors including cyber security, climate change, geopolitics, global competition, and shareholder activism shape the agendas in every boardroom today

NACD’s Governance Fellowship taught me the importance of being well-informed and well-prepared, knowing the companies and industries you serve, understanding the current trends shaping corporations today and in the future. As Stephen Hawking once said, “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” Change is the driver in business today; the ability to adapt and transform is a predictor of boardroom and business success.
