Communicating + Connecting During Covid-19
As we move forward from Covid-19 phase I, Crisis Response, it’s time for new communications in phase II, Back to Work. As U.S. business reopens, it is important to provide new information and updates to your business “family” and stakeholders in the days and weeks ahead, i.e. customers, clients, employees, shareholders, investors, analysts, board members, and donors. Let me offer a few best practices as you begin phase II communications:
Increase the frequency of communications; shift to weekly virtual meetings as a touchpoint; communicate consistently; pick up the phone, send an email, write a note; engage shareholders, investors, and analysts in constructive ways
Leverage communications across multiple platforms and audiences – e.g. post CEO town halls to YouTube, use Zoom video conferencing for interviews and post content to your company web site, LinkedIn, and other social media
Be honest and transparent in messaging and responses to questions, discuss business continuity plans, instill a sense of loyalty and trust, thank people for their business and continued support
Address safety measures, how you are adapting business practices, and what people can expect in the short-term going forward
Talk about engagement and outreach efforts to support the communities you serve, share your stories to inspire others
Offer free virtual access to online resources, briefings, and reports, invite guest access to webinars with industry experts, e.g. financial service providers offering expertise on the economy and financial markets, universities and think tanks offering expertise on business, crisis communications, and pandemic-relevant topics
If appropriate, share your contact information and invite people to reach out with questions and concerns
Communicate. Listen. Reassure. Remind your stakeholders we are all in this together and we will all come through this together. If I can be helpful navigating the way forward, please be in touch (email: contact@carolynehyde.com). I’m thinking of you and hope you and your families are healthy and safe.
